Making marks with oil pastels.

Where the Wild Things Are.
Our work this term is based on building upon our prior knowledge and our skills of making marks with oil pastels. Oil pastels are an interesting and very tactile medium that students enjoy using. We began this unit of work by experimenting with using the pastel in various ways so that we achieve marks. We also referred to these marks verbally. Eg We can make marks by 'flicking' the pastel or by 'twisting' the pastel.etc

A topic that I was sure would interest our students from Prep to Grade 6 was based on the Maurice Sendack book titled, 'Where the Wild Things Are'. Many of our students had seen the recent movie during the school holidays so they were keen to begin.

After reading the book, we looked the illustrations of various beast characters and discussed the emotions that the beasts portrayed. This was a lesson that outlined that art work can capture emotion. Students were also able to use a pencil in combination with oil pasel so that they are able to add fine facial detail.

Each student has now completed a beast of their choice and is currently working on creating their background. Each area of the school will use different mediums for their backgrounds.

Our art works are nearing completion, and will soon be on display in the main corridor and also in student's classrooms. Please come along and have a look.
